Homemade sprouted sathu maavu/health mix powder is one of the best nutritious weight gaining food that you can offer your baby. It is very easy to prepare and it gives you the full satisfaction of providing a healthy recipe to your baby prepared in home by yourself.

Health mix powder is highly nourishing and is rich in fiber, carbohydrates and protein. Since it is made with grains, nuts and millets, it makes a very healthy and a filling meal. It is not only a food for baby; adults can also have it as a health drink.

You can prepare the powder on a weekend; store them in an air tight container. Make porridge when needed and make your baby enjoy their healthy recipe.

Sathu maavu or Health mix powder can be prepared in two ways. One is by frying all the ingredients and making a powder. The other one by making sprouted millets and then fry and make it a powder. Preparing sprouted sathu maavu is a long and tedious process but nothing can beat the health benefits it has.

Sathu maavu or Health mix powder can be given to babies over 6 months. Start with two table spoon of sathu maavu or health mix porridge on the first day and increase the quantity slowly.

Method

Sprouting

The following millets can be sprouted:

  • Ragi
  • Green gram
  • Black gram
  • Chick peas
  • Bajra
  • Horse gram
  • Wheat
  • Corn

Steps for sprouting:

Step 1: Rinse all the above ingredients separately.

Step 2: Soak them in water overnight or atleast for 8 hours.

Step 3: Drain the water from the grains.

Step 4: The grains are tied in a soft cotton cloth like a bundle.

Step 5: After 8 to 10 hours, you can see sprout from the grains.

Dry the sprouted ingredients under sun for few hours.

Roasting the dried sprouts

  • After drying the sprouted ingredients, dry roast them seperately.
  • The other ingredients should be roasted separately.
  • Allow all the ingredients to cool down.

Grinding the roasted sprouts

Once all the roasted ingredients are allowed to cool, transfer them into a mixer-grinder and make it into a powder. Sift the powder to make it finer.

Storage

The sprouted home-made sathu maavu or health mix powder can be stored in an airtight container. It can be placed inside a refrigerator for 6 months or outside in a cool dry place for 2 to 3 months.

How to prepare the sprouted sathu maavu porridge?

In a heavy bottom pan, take 2 tablespoons of sprouted sathu maavu powder and mix well with water without lumps being formed. Cook it on a medium flame for about 10 minutes till it starts thickening. Stir continuously until the porridge is fully cooked. For additional flavors, add a little palm jaggery into the porridge.

For babies above 1 year, milk can be added while cooking.
